Can Dogs Wear a Harness All Day? When to Take It Off

The walk's done. Your dog's on the couch, harness still on, and unbuckling it can wait.

Can dogs wear a harness all day? It's best not to. A harness is walk gear: keep it on while you can see your dog, and take it off for crate time, overnight, and any time he's alone. We couldn't find a vet school that names a safe number of hours, so the rule is simple: if you can't see him, it comes off.

Is it safe to leave a harness on a dog all the time?

For most dogs, it's safest to treat the harness as something that goes on for walks and comes off afterward. There are three reasons.

  • Straps can catch. A harness has more straps, buckles and rings than a collar. Any of them can hook on a crate door, a fence, furniture or another dog's teeth during play.
  • Skin needs a break. Straps sit on the same spots all day. The area behind the front legs is where rubbing usually starts, and a fluffy coat can hide it.
  • Fit drifts. A harness that was snug in the morning can loosen as your dog moves, rolls and plays. A loose harness shifts and rubs more.

The Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine at Tufts University says a harness or collar can stay on during play as long as the dogs are being closely supervised. Supervision is the condition, not the hours. The working rule is to keep it on while you can see your dog and take it off when you can't.

When should you take your dog's harness off?

Situation Harness on or off? Why
On a walk or a car trip On This is what it's for. The leash clips to it.
At home, you're in the same room On is fine for a while You can see it if a strap snags or slips.
In the crate Off Straps and rings can catch on the crate wire.
Overnight and naps you won't watch Off No one is there to notice a snag or a twist.
Home alone Off Same reason. Ask your vet whether a flat collar with ID tags should stay on.
Rough play with another dog Only with close supervision Tufts says a harness or collar can stay on during play only if the dogs are closely supervised.
After a wet or muddy walk Off, and let it dry Damp fabric sitting on the skin is uncomfortable. Dry it before the next walk.

If your dog does need to wear a harness for long stretches, for example for a medical reason, ask your vet how long and how often to check it.

Can a dog sleep with a harness on?

We'd take it off. Sleep is the longest stretch of the day when nobody is watching, and a sleeping dog rolls, stretches and digs at the bedding. Even a dog used to its harness is better off without straps while he sleeps, since nobody is there to notice a snag.

Should a puppy wear one all the time?

The same rule applies, and it matters more. Puppies chew straps, wriggle into odd positions and grow fast, so a harness that fit last week can be tight this week. Put it on for short practice sessions and walks, take it off afterward, and do the two-finger check each time it goes on.

How do you check your dog's skin after a walk?

  1. Take the harness off and run your hand along where each strap sat: behind the front legs, across the chest, and over the shoulders.
  2. Part the fur behind the front legs and look at the skin itself, not just the coat.
  3. Look for flattened or thinning fur, pink or red patches, or damp spots.
  4. Watch your dog for licking or scratching at the same spot later.

Pink skin or flattened fur where a strap sat is a sign to re-check the fit. If it's still red later, or the skin is broken or scabbed, leave the harness off and call your vet. Our guide to harness rubbing under the arms covers the causes and fixes. The AKC's guide to a well-fitting harness quotes a trainer who has seen fur and skin rubbed raw from poorly fitted harnesses, so check every time.

Does a good fit change how long a dog can wear it?

A good fit makes every minute in the harness more comfortable, but it doesn't turn it into all-day wear. The AKC's rule is that you should be able to fit two fingers under the straps. Size by chest, not by guesswork. Here is the chart for the HAVLIN harness, measured around your dog's chest:

Size Chest Neck
XS 11.8 – 16.9 in (30 – 43 cm) 9.4 – 13.0 in (24 – 33 cm)
S 16.5 – 23.6 in (42 – 60 cm) 11.0 – 15.7 in (28 – 40 cm)
M 22.8 – 31.5 in (58 – 80 cm) 13.8 – 21.7 in (35 – 55 cm)
L 30.7 – 40.2 in (78 – 102 cm) 19.7 – 25.6 in (50 – 65 cm)

The measurements are taken by hand, so allow a small margin. For how to measure, see the dog harness size guide. For the full strap-by-strap check, see how to fit a dog harness.

What should your dog wear at home instead?

While you're home and around, a flat collar with ID tags, fitted so two fingers slide under it. Tufts says collars are best used only for holding tags, and that a well-fitted harness is the better choice for leash walking. When it's time to walk, the harness goes on and the leash clips to it. If you're still deciding between the two for walks, we compare them in dog harness vs collar.

If taking the harness off is a hassle, you'll leave it on. Easy buckles make the habit stick. Our guide on how to put on a padded dog harness covers a calm routine.
