Dog Harness vs Collar: Which Is Better for Walks?

Padded harness, collar and leash laid on a wooden bench

You clip the leash to your dog's collar, a squirrel runs by, and the leash goes tight against the neck. That's usually when owners start looking at harnesses.

Is a harness better than a collar for walks? For most dogs on a leash, yes. A harness takes the pull off the neck and puts it on the chest and shoulders. If your dog pulls hard or has a sensitive neck, start there. Most people keep the collar on for ID tags and clip the leash to the harness.

How do a harness and a collar differ?

Harness Collar
Where the leash pressure goes Across the chest and shoulders On the neck
Good for Walks, dogs that pull, neck-sensitive dogs ID tags, everyday wear, short trips
Fit check Two fingers under each strap, no sliding forward Two fingers between collar and neck
Escape risk Lower when well fitted, higher when loose Higher, a dog can back out of a loose collar
Main downside More straps to adjust; rubbing if it fits badly Neck strain on a hard pull

The AKC puts the difference this way: a harness distributes the pressure across a larger, less delicate area of the body, and a dog is less likely to slip out of a well-fitting harness than a collar. PetMD likewise says harnesses are recommended for dogs that pull, are hard to control, or have head and neck concerns.

When is a harness the better choice?

  • Your dog pulls. The pressure lands on the chest, not the throat.
  • Neck concerns. The AKC says a harness is better than a collar if your dog has neck or cervical disc issues. Ask your vet about your dog.
  • Flat-faced breeds. PetMD names brachycephalic breeds among dogs that do better in a harness.

A harness moves the pressure; it does not teach loose-leash walking. One r/Dogtraining commenter wrote that they had tried "3 harnesses and she still makes the heavy breathing noise when pulling" (comment). If your dog makes new or noisy breathing sounds on the leash, mention it to your vet.

When is a collar still the right call?

  • ID tags. Your dog should wear a collar with tags even when it walks in a harness.
  • Calm walkers that don't pull.
  • Quick trips to the yard, where putting on a harness is more fuss than it's worth.

Should you use both?

Many owners do. The collar carries the tags and the harness takes the leash. Some trainers suggest a second clip for dogs that panic and back out, which is easy to try if you have a matching collar and a leash with a clip. A loose collar is easier to slip than a snug harness, so check the fit of both.

How should each one fit?

  1. Collar: two fingers flat between the collar and your dog's neck.
  2. Harness: neck piece at the base of the neck, belly strap about a hand's width behind the front legs, two fingers under each strap. The full steps are in our harness fit guide.
  3. Size: measure the chest first. See the size guide.

Harness vs collar FAQ

Is a harness bad for a dog's shoulders?

Not when it fits. Check that your dog can move its front legs forward and out to the side, as the AKC advises. A harness that is too tight or sits across the armpits can get in the way.

Will a harness make my dog pull more?

We can't say that it will or won't. Walking manners come from training, and a harness changes where the pressure goes, not what your dog has learned.

Can my dog wear a harness all day?

We'd take it off at home. Check the skin behind the front legs regularly if it stays on for long. More in can dogs wear a harness all day.

Does my dog still need a collar if it wears a harness?

Yes, for the ID tags. Many owners keep a collar on and clip the leash to the harness. Our guide to choosing a matching collar and leash covers the pairing.

Which is better for a puppy?

A harness is a common choice because puppies pull and wriggle, but you will have to re-measure often as your puppy grows. See puppy harness size.
