How to Put On a Padded Dog Harness (Without a Fight)

Padded harness laid open with buckles undone and dog treats beside it

Pull a harness out of the drawer and plenty of dogs vanish. A padded harness is a lot more to wear than a flat collar, and some dogs let you know it.

How do you put on a padded dog harness? Lay it out, open the buckles, let your dog sniff it and get a treat, then put it on slowly without forcing it over the head. Fasten the buckles, adjust one strap at a time until two fingers fit flat under each, and walk around the house for a few minutes before you go outside.

What should you do before the harness goes on?

  1. Look at the harness first. Find the neck piece, the belly strap, the side-release buckles and the slide adjusters. Open the buckles and loosen the adjusters so there is room to work.
  2. Pick a calm moment. After a walk or a meal works better than when your dog is excited by the door.
  3. Have treats ready. Small ones, in your pocket.

How do you introduce it to a nervous dog?

The AKC says never force the harness over a nervous dog's head. If your dog has to put its head through the opening, let it do so voluntarily and reward it with a treat. Build up in small steps: reward your dog for sniffing the harness, then for bringing its head near it, then for putting its head through.

Keep each session to a minute or two, and end before your dog gets tired of it. A few short sessions beat one long fight.

What are the steps to put it on?

  1. Hold the harness open with the buckles undone. If your harness has a neck strap you can unclasp, use it, as the AKC suggests.
  2. Bring it to your dog rather than chasing your dog with it. Give a treat for each step.
  3. Fit the neck piece at the base of the neck, resting on the breastbone and not up against the throat.
  4. Fasten the belly strap so it sits about a hand's width behind the front legs. Click each buckle until it locks.
  5. Adjust one strap at a time. PetMD advises adjusting one strap at a time. Slide two fingers flat under each strap: two should fit, not your whole hand.
  6. Check both escape routes. Pull gently toward the head to see if it slides forward, and check it won't slip off the rear. The harness fit guide has the full test.

What if your dog wriggles or freezes?

What your dog does What helps
Ducks away from the harness Go back a step: treat for sniffing it, leave it on the floor near the food bowl.
Freezes once it's on Treats and a short walk indoors, then take it off once your dog has settled.
Backs up or twists out It's probably loose. Tighten one strap and test again.
Scratches at it Check the straps aren't pinching in the armpit area. See harness rubbing under the arms.

How long should the first wear last?

Ten minutes indoors the first day is plenty. Add a short walk on day two. Check the skin behind the front legs each time for the first week.

Quick checklist

  1. Buckles open, adjusters loosened
  2. Treats ready, calm moment
  3. Neck piece at the base of the neck
  4. Belly strap a hand's width behind the front legs
  5. Two fingers under every strap
  6. Short indoor walk before the first outing

Putting on a padded harness FAQ

Which way does the harness go on?

It depends on the design. Check which straps unbuckle, and don't force a harness over your dog's head if it resists.

Should I put it on at the door?

Not at first. Practice in a calm room so the door and the walk aren't tied to the harness.

My dog hates the harness. Is it the wrong one?

Not necessarily. Many dogs need a few short sessions with treats. If it rubs or won't fit, re-check the size. For the causes and a step-by-step plan, see why does my dog hate his harness.

How tight should it be?

Two fingers fit flat under each strap, no more and no less.

How do I get a squirmy puppy to hold still?

Keep sessions very short, use treats, and have the harness fully adjusted in advance so you only need to click and tighten. For sizing a growing puppy, see puppy harness size.

What if I can't get it to fit?

Email us within 30 days of delivery. We can help you exchange it for another size or refund it, as long as it is unused.

Loosen it fully before you start, and a wriggly dog gets easier. HAVLIN's harness uses side-release buckles and slide adjusters, so it opens wide. The set comes with a matching collar, leash and bag holder, and shipping to the US is free (about 12 to 25 business days). Worth a few calm minutes indoors first.
