Cute Dog Walk Sets Usually Fail in Two Places. Here's What to Check Before You Buy

We went through almost 600 Amazon reviews of harness sets. The good ones talk about color and comfort. The bad ones? Wrong size, or straps and clips that gave out after a few walks.

In our own keyword count of 597 Amazon reviews across 22 harness listings (pulled Oct 2026): 89 of the 343 reviews rated 1 to 3 stars mentioned sizing or fit, 56 mentioned something that broke, frayed, tore or got chewed, and 60 of them still called the product "cute" or "adorable." We pulled low-star and high-star reviews separately, so these are not market-wide rates.

Problem 1: The size is wrong

Sizing was the single biggest complaint in the low-star reviews we read, and far more people said "runs small" than "runs big." A typical story: the set looked great, it was too tight, and it went back.

What to check before you buy:

  • Is there a real size chart with chest measurements? A chart that only lists weight, or "small / medium / large" with no numbers, is a warning sign.
  • Is it in inches? Many sets are made overseas and the chart is in centimeters, or uses weight units most of us have never seen. Converting by guesswork is how people end up a size too small.
  • What happens if it doesn't fit? Look for a clear exchange policy before you order, not after.

Problem 2: It looks great but doesn't last

The second pattern is what we started calling "cute, but." Plenty of low-star reviews still called the set cute or adorable, then went on to describe straps fraying, Velcro giving up, or a buckle or clip breaking after a few walks.

What to check before you buy:

  • Look at the hardware, not just the color. Close-up photos of the buckles, the D-ring and the leash clip tell you more than a styled photo.
  • Avoid Velcro-only closures for dogs that pull or wriggle. Buckles and adjustable webbing hold their position better.
  • Check where the strap meets the padding. That seam takes the load when your dog pulls.
  • Check the leash clip. A small, thin clip on a big, strong dog is a mismatch.

One more thing reviewers mention: comfort

When people loved their harness, "soft" and "comfortable" came up again and again. When they didn't, rubbing under the front legs was a common reason. A padded chest panel helps, but the fit matters most. The belly strap should sit about a hand's width behind the front legs. Our harness fitting guide shows how to check it.
